Happy Handlebars is a project to encourage everyone in Essex to discover the pleasure of cycling. In partnership with en-form (Colchester's environmental information centre) we host a vast selection of cycle rides, groups and activities for people of all ages.
Happy Handlebars was founded to build on the great work done in the last ten years by organisations such as the national cycling charity, Cycling UK, new local groups, including the Braintree Easy Riders, Chelmsford Chainlinks, Cycling for Pleasure Colchester and Maldon Mudguards, as well as partners Inclusion Ventures in Clacton and Jaywick, all of whom offer easy rides and activities to get people into cycling.
With funding and support from Active Essex, Happy Handlebars is delivering more activities and working closely with local authorities and health agencies in each of these areas to reach many more people.
The emphasis is on making our rides so comfortable and enjoyable that people come again and again. We encourage people to progress and many of the people who join us have become new volunteers and advocates for cycling.
The project is organised and operated by Richard Monk, Simon Leach, Gifford Lewis and Mick Palmer, who each have a wide range of experience in instructing, leading rides and managing cycling projects.
The team have helped over 6,000 people in Essex to get cycling in the last eight years, and now they aim to help another 6,000 re-discover the pleasure of cycling.
